It's so sad because legally the court can't count artwork as the gallery's property. They should know how consignment laws work. But, as you say, the artist usually loses the artwork when the gallery defaults on loans and bills.

I have my own horror stories, and even the artists who do make a practice of keeping good records get bit. The former gallery dealer sort of disappears.
