The 20 Hour Challenge

Announcing a new website designated just for The 20 Hour Studio Challenge.

I've been writing blogs for Clint Watson's newsletter since last October. Today, Clint created a new site - where I'll be posting blogs, articles about "Creative Productivity". On occasion, I'll blog about interviews that I've conducted with professional artists who manage their time and careers effectively.

If you're interested in receiving this information, go to:
www.20hourstudiochallenge.com   and sign up for our Email Newsletter - click on "Join The Challenge"

Let's spur each other on to greater productivity with quality. We'll all feel better if we spend more time in the studio, and at the very least, we'll have a body of work that we can feel proud of.

Sincerely,
Lori W.S.

Questions for You

My best childhood friend is highly left brained, while I am significantly more right brained.  If only I had understood that as a teenager, I probably would have not beat myself up so often for thinking of myself as unstable.

While my friend played the piano, flute and guitar beautifully - while reading the music at the same time, I would irritate her to no end by playing the piano by ear. After all, her mother spent good money on lessons, and she spent eons of time practicing. At the present time, we both understand where the other is coming from and so jealousy between us has evaporated. She likes to follow instructions, while I insist on following my own way. We learned to sew together: she followed the pattern, and I followed my nose. Incidentally, my friend was successful 100% of the time with the outcome, while I was only marginally successful with just a few garments.

I am an artist - I was probably born to be an artist because I live and learn with right brained thinking. I resist following the crowd. I get into trouble a lot, waste material, and seem scatterbrained most of the time. My left-brained friend's house is neat, with everything in place. But truth be known, we envy each other still (in a small way) because neither of us is capable of living and learning like the other.

So today, I would like to ask some questions of you artists out there. I'm curious to know what the reality is - are most of us artists right-brainers?  I suspect that women are naturally more right brained because we biologically have to know what's going on all around us at all times. We are scanners... while men are generally focus oriented. Some of my women friends are engineers at heart and are more left brained, so their lives seem more put together. They write and complete their "to do" lists, while I tend to misplace mine and totally forget what's on them.

Question: Are you able to follow a routine that allows you to get most everything on your to do list done? Or is the idea of an organzied life fleeting?

Question 2: Would you rather follow a formula or recipe, or are you inclined to fine your own way to get things done?

Question 3: Do you consider yourself a trailblazer or a pathfollower?

There is no "better" answer, so please don't try to answer these the way you think you should. This world needs all types of people. Everybody has personality assets and liabilities. My best friend and I had an idea recently... she loves to quilt but uses someone else's ideas and patterns.  I love to paint - freestyle, so I thought we'd put our efforts together: I can paint large squares with a theme, and she can quilt around them with colors that go with my paintings. Now if only I can make the time.

Please answer when you get a chance and if you feel like it. No pressure here to put another "to do" on your list (which you may not be able to find)
